Junior high school students create "Onomichi Pasta" using local ingredients! 15 junior high schools in the city compete to decide the grand prize winner!

With the desire to revitalize Onomichi through food, all 15 junior high schools in Onomichi City came up with "Onomichi Pasta" using local ingredients, and a judging panel was held on December 24th where students cooked, presented and tasted their creations.

Judging was conducted in two categories: the Yamanami Division and the Shimanami Division. From the preparation stage to the judging session, the students learned about Onomichi City's specialties, and with advice from local restaurant owners, they worked hard to come up with menu names and recipes from scratch.

・"Today's enemy is tomorrow's friend? Stingray and clam pasta with the scent of sea breeze"

All of the dishes are made with lemons, seafood, and figs, which are specialties of Onomichi City, making them very appetizing! One junior high school even made the noodles by hand!

At the judging session, the students cooked their own dishes for the judges to taste. The appetizing aroma filled the venue, and some students were seen taking on new challenges, such as filleting a fish for the first time.

The actual judging has finally begun!

In the presentations given before the tasting, the students clearly explained the attention to detail in their cooking and the appeal of the local ingredients, and their presentations left the students wanting to try the dishes right away!

The judging was based on five criteria: 1) taste, 2) Onomichi-ness, 3) color (appearance), 4) presentation skills, and 5) naming sense and originality.

One of the students commented, "Through pasta, I was able to learn about and communicate the ingredients and charms of Onomichi."

From now on, we would like to spread the charm of Onomichi to more people through our recipes.

Future Developments 📢

We plan to compile each school's recipe on one page and widely publicize "Onomichi Pasta" to the public.

All the pasta dishes were delicious, showcasing the appeal of local ingredients and the unique ideas of junior high school students. "Onomichi Pasta," born from repeated learning and challenges, is something we look forward to reaching even more people through the publication of recipes and increased opportunities to serve it in the future. 🍽️
